First Candle Offers New PSAs for Sudden Unexpected Infant Death
Dear PSA Director,
First Candle is the national organization committed to ending Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) and educating families on life-saving safe sleep strategies.
SUID claims the lives of over 3,500 babies every year with more than twice the number of Black babies dying than white babies.
Recently, new guidelines about safe sleep were released by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Some of the most important messages are that baby should sleep alone, on his/her back, on a firm mattress with no pillows, blankets, stuffed animals or fluffy bumpers in the area.
We know that a baby’s death is difficult to think about and no parent imagines it will happen to them. That’s why it’s so important to highlight a young mom who lost her baby. Families need to see that this can happen to anybody but, by adopting safe sleep habits, we can dramatically reduce the number of deaths.
